It's a childhood staple: summer camp! But for children with grave diseases or conditions, 24-hour care makes this tradition nearly impossible. One Michigan camp decided to make it possible.

From the 1920s through the ’70s, the University of Michigan offered a green sanctuary northwest of Ann Arbor as a retreat for kids in need of special attention. It was called The Fresh Air Camp. Today, the site is called North Star Reach. Read about the rich history that belongs to the place we now call home.
In just three summers since its opening, Camp North Star Reach, on 105 acres in Pinckney, Mich., has given 1,944 children with serious illnesses a weeklong summer camp experience free from barriers. And free of cost.
North Star Reach is featured as one of three SeriousFun Children's Network camps in the new half-hour Connecticut Public Television documentary, "A World of Possibilities: SeriousFun Children's Network."

We just wrapped up an incredible first-ever Fall Family Camp season. During our four weekend sessions, held from late September through early November, we hosted 48 fantastic families, which included 180 campers of all ages. Many thanks to our all-star team of dedicated volunteers: We couldn’t have done it without you!
We are thrilled to share the news, just in today, that North Star Reach has been accepted as a Full Member Camp of SeriousFun Children’s Network, one of the world’s largest communities of camps and program for children living with serious illnesses.
To each and every individual who joined us for an unforgettably inspiring first summer season—including our remarkable campers and their families, dedicated volunteers, and generous donors—we extend our deepest gratitude. We couldn’t have created life-changing camp experiences for more than 200 children without you.
With the help of the Sickle Cell Disease Association of Illinois (SCDAI), 30 Chicago-area children living daily with this genetic and chronic disease will arrive at North Star Reach today and spend a week at camp.
